Tentoonstelling / Among the trees

In de Hayward Gallery in Londen loopt tot 17 mei 2020 een prachtige tentoonstelling ‘Among the trees’. Afwisselend poëtisch, avontuurlijk en tot nadenken stemmend, onderzoekt deze groepstentoonstelling onze relatie met bomen en bossen. Ook als je met de huidige Coronacrisis de tentoonstelling niet kunt bezoeken, loont het de moeite om even op de website te gaan kijken.

 


Among the Trees voert ons over de hele wereld – van Colombiaanse regenwouden en afgelegen Japanse eilanden tot olijfboomgaarden in Israël en een 9550 jaar oude spar in Zweden. Door de aandacht te vestigen op de schoonheid, schaal en complexiteit van bomen en bossen, zetten de 38 kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling onze visie op de natuurlijke wereld op zijn kop en nodigen ze ons uit om deze met nieuwe ogen te zien.

Of het nu gaat om het verkennen van de manier waarop bomen – met een veel langere levensduur dan die van onszelf – onze manier van denken over tijd uitdagen, of te onthullen hoe ze nauw verweven zijn met menselijke aangelegenheden, deze kunstenaars verlevendigen en vergroten onze waardering voor deze opmerkelijke organismen.

Naast sculpturen en installaties, tekeningen, schilderijen en foto’s, zijn er kunstwerken die de grootte van bomen in de verf zetten. Zo is er een monumentale sculptuur gegoten op basis van een 2000 jaar oude olijfboom door Ugo Rondinone; een filmisch portret van een 30 meter hoge spar van Eija-Liisa Ahtila; en een enorm bos van bomen volledig opgetrokken uit karton door Eva Jospin.

In een tijd waarin de vernietiging van de bossen in de wereld in een recordtempo versnelt, benadrukt Among the Trees op levendige wijze de onmisbare rol die bomen spelen in ons leven en onze verbeelding.
